Spells to Mend Broken Hearts
Rebecca Stead meets Sarah Mlynowski in this enchanting, relatable, and commercial middle grade novel about dealing with divorce, friendship breakups, and how much we wish that magic could fix it all.
When Alex finds her grandmother’s old spell book, On Small Magics, she’s in a pretty rough spot. It’s halfway through freshman year, she’s recovering from a field hockey injury, and her family has just moved to the other side of the country. The Oregon Coast is wet and windy, her parents’ relationship stormy, and the prospect of starting over couldn’t be any drearier.
So when the super cool, tarot-obsessed Tess crashes into her life, it’s nothing short of a miracle. Their friendship forms fast and strong as they set out to use On Small Magics to solve their high school woes. But when Tess wants to use the book’s magic to get back with her ex, messy feelings bubble up – ones that magic won’t be able to solve.
